  • Are you feeling stuck, despondent or lacking in motivation?

  • Feeling like something needs to change, but you’re unsure what or where to start?

  • Do you want to get things happening and set goals for yourself but are unsure how to make them feel good?

  • Like the sound of living with more intention, but it feels daunting and too hard?

I understand. I’ve felt all of these many times.

It’s hard not to when there are so many things we can see in the world that we desperately want to change but feel unable to make a difference as they are out of our control.

Focusing on the things that are within my control has helped me, especially when I am feeling discouraged, either personally or about something happening in the world.

And getting very clear and intentional about how and what I will do within that space.

FOCUS.jpg

Put most simply, by CHOOSING what we focus on, we bring back a sense of control.

When we feel discouraged or overwhelmed, we can be very intentional about where we focus, which can bring us back to a place of calm and an increased sense of control.

And if we want to live a meaningful, intentional, purposeful life, we need to take control of what we pay attention to.

As the Tony Robbins quote says, “Where focus goes, energy flows.”

Start small

My favourite way to get intentional and shift a feeling of despondency or lack of motivation is to start small.

When we feel overwhelmed, lack motivation, or face a large, daunting goal, it can feel challenging to know where to start. That’s why starting small is key!

Research supports that when we start with one small thing or one small step, regardless of the size of change we want to make, we jumpstart our motivation and obtain a sense of achievement. Which in turn supports us to take the next step towards our goal, and the next.

After all, even big changes are really just a series of smaller changes made over time.

And if you needed more persuading, Viktor Frankl, in Man’s Search for Meaning, shares that from his experience in Nazi concentration camps, those with short-term goals fared better and maintained a better sense of well-being than those with longer-term goals.

The Design Your Season approach supports you in starting small with customised, made-for-you, short-term goals.

A good way to try living with intention

It’s all sounds great, right? But you’re still not sure this intentional living thing is for you.

I get it. It can be daunting to make large changes in your life or consider living with intention for an entire year (or more). But by starting small, with a shorter, 3-month period (a ‘season’) or a time of your choosing, living with intention feels far more doable.

Designing your Season can be an experimental way to practice living with intention, see what it feels like AND see what changes occur in your life as a result of being more intentional.

What is Designing a Season?

I’ve written about designing your season and designing this season before.

I first heard the idea of Designing Your Summer on the podcast Happier with Gretchen Ruben.

According to Gretchen, designing a season is about planning ahead for a 3-month period around how you want to feel and what you'd like to do or accomplish.

For me, designing and planning any period of time around how you want to feel and what you might like to achieve seems like a fun way to break up the year.

The year will move on either way, but by paying attention to it, feeling its beat, and noticing the moments of transition - perhaps even taking time to think about what we want from the next phase in the year - we can get the measure of it.

Design your Season

Design your season Workshop.png

So, have you considered how you want to use next week, the next month or even the next three months?

What do you want to remember this time for?

How do you want to feel during this period and at the end of this time?

What ‘flavour’ do you want to give these weeks or months?

How can you make your chosen time period memorable for the right reasons?

My Design Your Season self-guided workshop with workbook shares my approach to refocusing my energy and getting motivated each time I feel stuck. Working through the questions and actions helped provide clarity and support when I needed it most.

After completing the Self-Guided Design Your Season Workshop and workbook, you will have a high-level strategic plan for making the most of ANY time period and truly having designed your season.
