Live your ending now: living life with purpose

As a parent who has lost a child, I am acutely aware of how quickly life can change or end.  In an instant, our whole world can be turned upside down.   Life is short, and precious. Regardless of whether you have lost someone or not, we all want to make the most of our life.  We want to look back without regret.  We want to live our life fully; to appreciate it and not feel we are constantly 'waiting' until we can live that life.

But how do we honour that feeling?  How do we ensure our life has purpose?  What spurs us into action?   How do we bring joy back into the everyday?

Truthfully, the biggest motivator for me is contemplating my ending.

Defining the ending

When I refer to the ending, yes, I mean at the end of my life.  Partly therefore, defining the ending is answering the question; what do I want people to say about me when I am in my final days (end of life)?  And partly, it’s about answering the questions of myself; what do I want, who do I want to be, what do I seek, what am I striving for, what am I hoping for?

Clearly, to know what our ending is, we need to define it and describe what it looks like to us.

Let's work with the ending being defined as what you are working towards. Your purpose, if you will.

What is it that you are hoping to achieve, to have, in your life?

Is it -

  • a beautiful home filled with gorgeous things?

  • being surrounded by the people you love?

  • a happy healthy life?

  • being able to travel where you want, whenever you want?

  • taking an adventure?

  • looking back on your life with no regrets?

  • waking up every day excited by what lies ahead of you?

  • making a difference and knowing that you will change lives today?

  • knowing that you are in the perfect job that brings you happiness and joy and you wouldn't do anything else?

  • living a happy, joyful life?

  • knowing that your strengths, gifts and talents are being valued and appreciated?

  • appreciating the little things and acknowledging the beauty all around us?

  • having a lifestyle that ensures you do all the things you love and be with the people you love?

By taking some time to define our ending we can then live for that ending. It's a different approach to goal-setting as it helps determine where we're going.  And knowing where we are headed is motivating.

How do you want to feel?

To know how you want to feel, you need to get clear about what matters to you.  How do you want to feel and be when you come to this ending?

  • Calm and happy?

  • Joyful?

  • Centred and balanced?

  • Free?

  • Fulfilled?

  • Loved and loving?

The list of how you want to feel may appear similar to others, but it will be uniquely yours. The words represent how you desire to live life.

The combination is powerful

The combination of what you want and how you want to feel is enormously powerful.  Pausing, reflecting and taking some time to define our ending, (or a general idea around that) helps guide us in our life.

Knowing our path and knowing what we are aiming for, helps focus our decisions along the way.  It's not a mission statement or an end goal per se.  Rather it contributes to a greater sense of purpose.  It's about creating the feeling we've identified, and the corresponding life, as much as possible in the here and now.

We have to write our own ending. It needs to be ours, and ours alone.

Tap into what you desire; the person you want to be, the life you want to have, what you want to be known for, the thread that you want running through your life, and then design your life around that.  Make a conscious decision to do something little today that will help you feel the way you want to feel at the ending.  By taking action now, you are one step closer to living that ending today, on your terms.

This is living for the ending.  It's living for your ending, not someone else's.
